Located in the heart of Kilmainhamwood Village, Kilmainhamwood National School is situated in a picturesque setting surrounded by trees with the River Dee running just beyond the school grounds. The school has a large playing area for children to avail of. Two big, tarmacked areas along with a large grass area, provide the children with an abundance of space in which to play and learn. Adjacent to the tennis and basketball courts, is a handball wall. Children from 2nd to 6th class participate in handball lessons each week throughout the year and can play at break times. The large green area provides space for football, rounders, and athletics in dry weather. A newly built school garden runs parallel to the grass area. This is an area which children love to explore with a mud kitchen, insect hotels, and a balance beam. The landscaped garden provides an ideal location for an outdoor classroom with picnic benches and whiteboards for the teachers and children to use.
The school itself has five large sized classrooms, each colourful and vibrant with an emphasis on providing children with welcoming and effective learning environments. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard which enables teachers to deliver dynamic and interactive lessons to their class. A sensory room provides children with a peaceful and comfortable space in which they can reset and self-regulate with tranquil lights and music. We are fortunate to have a large sized hall which can be used for PE on wet days. However, it is also utilised for many other functions such as whole school assembly, music lessons and external coaches.
Each classroom has an excellent supply of literacy and numeracy resources which support children in their learning. A library and reading corner are a central focus in each classroom with an emphasis on reading for pleasure. Our resource room provides teachers and children with access to STEM and Art supplies along with 30 iPads. The use of ICT resources is interwoven throughout the school day and the children delight in using technology to learn.
As our school continues to grow and change, we are continuing to strive to improve the facilities and resources available within our school. Join us on our journey, as we build something special in Kilmainhamwood National School, in the shaping of the future minds of tomorrow.
